Dayton girls overrun Knights

WALLA WALLA — The visiting Dayton Bulldogs girls basketball team took an 11-2 first-quarter lead over Walla Walla Valley Academy here Saturday night, and went on to win 41-33 in Southeast 2B action.

“We started out slow,” Dayton coach Lloyd Redberg said. “We didn’t even score a point until six minutes into the game. It was a slow start that we inevitably couldn’t crawl out from. We only scored two free throws in the first quarter — not even a field goal.”

WWVA guards Emily Field and Amy Arnzen, who average just over 30 points a game combined, were held to just six points and shut out completely in the first half.

The Bulldogs’ McKayla Bickelhaupt scored a game-high 19 points, and Sarah Phillips added nine for Dayton.

The top scorer for the Knights was Megan Gregg with 12.

“Give them credit,” Redberg said. “Dayton executed a good game plan of shutting down our best scorers and making adjustments offensively. We knew Bickelhaupt was their top scorer, but didn’t do a good job of covering her.”

WWVA (5-7 overall, 0-5 SE 2B) plays again Monday in Waitsburg-Prescott at 6 p.m.

“If we’re going to do anything (in league),” Redberg said, “now is the time.”
