WALLA WALLA — Mikayla Ferenz scored 14 points while Torri Crawford added 12 and Madi Doepker recorded a double-double — with 11 points and 10 rebounds — as Wa-Hi coasted to a 50-27 victory over Kennewick in Mid-Columbia Conference girls basketball action Saturday night in the Blue Devil gym.

Harried by Kennewick Lions defense, Wa-Hi’s Madi Doepker pulls down a rebound during the second half Saturday night.

Wa-Hi upped its league record to 6-2 and overall mark to 12-2 with Saturday’s conquest.

On Friday, the Blue Devils lost at Kamiakin, 63-55, despite 17 points from Ferenz.

“The girls played hard (Friday) night,” Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said.

The Blue Devils started slowly on Saturday, but led 10-7 after one quarter, only to watch the Lions take an 11-10 edge with 6:15 left in the second period.

But in the final 5:24 of the frame, Wa-Hi went on an 18-2 blitz to take control of the game. Ferenz and Crawford tallied five points apiece as the Blue Devils zoomed into halftime with a 28-13 lead.

“We woke up,” Meliah said. “It’s hard to play (on Saturday) after playing Friday night, but we have to be able to mentally overcome that. It took us a quarter to do that.”

Wa-Hi stretched its lead to 23 points, 42-19, by the end of the third quarter and kept that margin intact at the final buzzer.

The Blue Devils held Kennewick to just nine field goals and 21-percent shooting from the field.

“We started executing,” Meliah said. “Defensive stops. That’s what gets our offense going. We went to a man (defense). We’re better in our man defense.”

Wa-Hi hosts Southridge on Tuesday.
