DAYTON — Columbia County sheriff Walt Hessler announced his retirement at a county commission meeting this morning.
Hessler, who has served as sheriff since 2007, says he will step down June 30. Because he was elected as a Republican, the county Republican Party will interview replacement candidates and present their top three candidates to county commissioners.
“I’m anticipating we’re going to move the process at a measured pace,” said Dwight Richter, who represents the Columbia County Republicans at the party’s state committee. He added that the party would try to present candidate recommendations as soon as possible.
