EUGENE — Freshman guard Jamie Weisner had 22 points and Oregon State held off a late rally by rival Oregon for a 63-53 victory on Tuesday night.
It was the fourth straight win for Oregon State in the longstanding rivalry series between the two teams, who meet again in Corvallis on Sunday.
Oregon State (8-9, 2-3 Pac-12) led by as many as 24 points but the Ducks pulled to within 54-45 with 4:41 left on Jordan Loera’s 3-pointer.
Sophomore Liz Brenner got Oregon closer with a pair of free throws before Weisner hit a jumper.
Amanda Delgado’s 3-pointer for the Ducks again narrowed it to 57-50, but Patricia Bright’s jumper for Oregon State with 1:52 left all but sealed it.
Both teams made free throws for the final margin.
It was the seventh straight loss for Oregon (2-15, 0-5) after consecutive nonconference wins against Fresno State and Samford, the Ducks’ only victories this season.
Oregon State has lost six of their last eight games, but also stole a victory from Arizona last weekend.
The Ducks have struggled all season with injuries, and were even down to a seven-player rotation at one point earlier in the season.
But they recently saw the return of Brenner, who missed most of the nonconference schedule while she helped Oregon’s volleyball team reach the NCAA championship game.
Brenner led the Ducks with 17 points.
Oregon State used an 11-0 run to go up 12-4 early on Weisner’s 3-pointer, extended the lead to 27-14 on Mollee Schwegler’s 3-pointer, then to 33-18 on Deven Hunter’s tip-in with 3:39 left in the first half.
Weisner, the Pac-12’s freshman player of the week, capped the first half with another 3-pointer and Oregon State led 37-20.
Another Weisner 3 pushed the lead to 44-20 in the second half.
But the Ducks rallied, pulling within 50-38 on freshman Jillian Allyne’s tip-in and Brenner’s layup.
After Brenner missed the second of a pair of free throws, Danielle Love made a 3-pointer for the Ducks to close to within 50-42 with 6:25 left.
Allyne finished with seven points and 13 rebounds for the Ducks.
