Pomeroy, W-P grapplers win at Ritzville meet

RITZVILLE, Wash. — Pomeroy wrestlers won eight of 14 matches at a meet in Ritzville Thursday.

Greg Florec and Blaine Reisdorph each won two matches, while Clayton King, Jack Niece, and Wyatt Jenkins each wrestled and won one match.

Jenkins, who is 24-2 on the year, is in position to take a crack at the state title this season after falling in the title bout at the WIAA championships for consecutive seasons.

“He only had one match tonight, but he kind of continues to be the top dog at 170(-pounds) for the (WIAA Class) Bs,” Pomeroy coach Brian Slaybaugh said. “I think he has a really good chance at winning the title — he’s a pretty dedicated wrestler. He’s worked hard for it.”

Waitsburg-Prescott had a school record set at the meet, with Steven Grimes pinning Lind-Ritzville-Sprague’s Karl Hawks in 13 seconds at 170 pounds.

Grimes also pinned LRS’s Ethan Melville in 3:28.

Also for W-P, Brandon Aceves pinned White Swan’s Arthur Martin in 2:57 at 132, James Thompkins pinned LRS’s Pedro Huitron in 36 seconds at 138, Trenton Kitselman pinned Huitron in 2:42 and Tri-Cities Prep’s Luis Sauceda in 3:47 at 145.

Also at 145 pounds, W-P’s Kavin Kuykendall pinned LRS’s Nick Kuest in 1:34 for his first pin.

Jesse Rawson picked up a 7-5 decision over LRS’s Kuest at 152 pounds, and Tristan Newman pinned LRS’s Layne Hawks in 57 seconds as well as LRS’s Matt Vercoe in the first round at 285 pounds.

The Pirates will get a boost Saturday when Austin Reisdorph returns a week ahead of schedule from an injury suffered during the football season.

Reisdorph moved up a class to 220 after placing second in state at 195.

“He’s hit the weight room and he’s really gotten a lot bigger and a lot stronger than last year,” Slaybaugh said of Reisdorph. “He should do well even though he’s gotten a late start.”

The Pirates travel to a meet in Kittitas on Saturday.

W-P heads to the Ephrata Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.
