WALLA WALLA —Emily Baumgart scored a game-high 14 points and Allison Wujek put up a double-double — 12 points and 10 rebounds — as Southeast 2B-leading DeSales posted a comfortable 43-29 victory over Asotin in a girls high school basketball matchup Friday night in the Irish gym.

DeSales, ranked No. 7 in the state in the latest Associated Press poll, improved to 6-0 in league and 12-2 overall despite playing without starting guard Ashlyn Lyons due to a prior commitment.

Baumgart made her presence felt early with seven first-quarter points as the Irish fashioned a 14-9 lead after eight minutes.

DeSales did not allow a Panther field goal in the second quarter as it stretched its margin to 12, 25-13, by halftime. Five Irish players scored in the period led by Baumgart’s four.

The two teams combined for just nine points in an offensively-challenged third quarter. Wujek tallied five points in the frame as DeSales took a 30-17 lead into the fourth quarter.

Wujek added four more points in the fourth quarter as the Irish coasted home with the 14-point triumph.

Asotin shot just 20 percent (11-for-55) from the field for the game. The Panthers had just six field goals through three quarters.

“They struggled putting the ball in the hole,” DeSales coach Tim Duncan said. “We can put teams in rush mode. Sometimes when they get open looks, they’re wondering where we are.”

Like the Panthers, the Irish experienced their share of shortcomings offensively. DeSales shot just 31 percent (14-of-45) from the floor and turned the ball over 25 times, 14 of which came in the first half.

“We were a little sluggish without Ashlyn,” Duncan said. “We changed our rotation. I did like some of our execution with our high-low game. Abby (Crowley) did a good job passing the ball.

“We turned the ball over too much in the first half,” Duncan said. “We keep wanting to make the great play. We’re smart, but we don’t play smart very often. We’ve got to figure it out.”

The Irish step out of league play Tuesday when they host Riverside at 5 p.m.
