Big Bend snaps 16-game WWCC win streak

MOSES LAKE — Walla Walla Community College’s win streaks, six in a row in East Region play and 16 in a row overall, were snapped here Saturday afternoon in women’s NWAACC East Region action.

Big Bend held the Warriors to 31 percent shooting from the floor and pulled out a 50-48 win.

“It was one of those nights on the road,” Warrior coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “Nothing went right. We had mental breakdowns all night. We shot poorly, missed lay ins, and didn’t score.”

The Warriors connected on only 7-of-28 field goal attempts in the first half and the Vikings raced to a 24-19 lead at intermission.

WWCC regrouped and took a 3-point lead only to see the Vikings tie it at 48-48. The Warriors, with :32 left, held for a last shot and had a good look but it didn’t go. One last ‘mental breakdown’ proved to be the most costly.

The Warriors fouled Hannah Smith, and Smith hit both free throws to send the Vikings to the win.

“We made a mistake and fouled,” Hazeltine said. “At worst, it should’ve been overtime. It (the loss) shouldn’t have happened.”

Alli Winters proved to be the Warrior nemesis as Winters hit four treys and finished with a game-high 22 points for the Vikings.

In addition to the Warrior shooting woes, the Vikings forced 22 Warrior turnovers and scored 20 points off those turnovers.

Hailey Felgenhauer led the Warriors with 12 points and Allie Kelsey added seven. Michelle Seitz grabbed a team leading 10 rebounds as the Warriors out boarded the Vikings 49-38, even though the Vikings’ Sierra Zollinger pulled down a game-high 12.

The Warriors drop to 6-1 in the East and 17-2 overall. WWCC drops into a tie with CBC, also 6-1, for the East lead and the Hawks visit the Dietrich Dome Wednesday.

“That’s a big one,” Hazeltine commented. “Hopefully, we can bounce back.”
