DAYTON — Dayton’s McKayla Bickelhaupt sparked Dayton to a 45-40 win over previously undefeated, in Southeast 2B play, DeSales here Saturday in girls SE2B basketball action. Bickelhaupt scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds as the Bulldogs bounced back from a Friday loss at Waitsburg to pull out the 45-40 decision.

“We were wondering how we would be with another big game against our rivals,” Bulldog coach Clayton Strong said. “But, we were focused.”

The Irish overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit but couldn’t secure a defensive rebound off a missed Dayton free throw with 1:17 left. Malia Frame got the offensive rebound for the Bulldogs and put it back to ice the Bulldog win.

“They (DeSales) hit a couple of late 3s,” Strong said of the Irish come back. “It worried me because when they get it going, they’re tough.

“The ball bounced to Malia,” Strong said of the put back. “She made a reverse pivot and put it back to keep the (point) spread.”

“We got out worked,” Irish coach Tim Duncan said. “They went to a zone which was different from what they did in the past. We did not execute very well and didn’t shoot well when we got shots. Hats off to them they out competed us.”

“We put the zone in to pinch their posts,” Strong said. “We wanted to chase them around the 3-point line.”

Ashlyn Lyons led DeSales with 12 points and Emily Baumgart finished with 10.

Lexie Ramirez chipped in nine points for the Bulldogs.

Dayton hosts WWVA Tuesday before closing out the regular season Saturday at Tri Cities Prep.

DeSales drops to 7-1 in SE2B action and Dayton hangs onto second as they improve to 6-2.

On Friday, the Irish had three in double digits as the Irish defeated Tri Cities Prep 61-31.

Allison Wujek led the way with 12 points. Abby Crowley and Ashlyn Lyons both added 11 to the Irish win.

“Friday was totally opposite from Saturday,” Duncan said. “We had fewer turn overs in the game than we had in the first half Saturday. It (Friday) was a good overall effort.”

DeSales travels to Sunnyside Christian Tuesday for a non-league battle and closes out the regular season with a home league game with Waitsburg-Prescott Friday and a trip to Asotin Saturday.
