MELBOURNE, Australia — Wa-Hi graduate David Wagner picked up the Quad Wheelchair Singles title as well as teaming with Nick Taylor for the Quad Wheelchair Doubles championship at the Australian Open Saturday.
Wagner, who played basketball and golf for the Blue Devils, graduated from Wa-Hi in 1993. Two years later, he was paralyzed while playing frisbee on Redondo Beach, Calif.
He turned to table tennis during his rehabilitation, and began playing wheelchair tennis in 1999. Wagner was soon the top-ranked quadriplegic player in the world, and has won numerous singles and doubles titles since.
Wagner was top-ranked in both events at the Australian Open.
