DAYTON — Dayton came out on top of Walla Walla Valley Academy Tuesday night, 38-31, in a Southeast 2B girls basketball game in which the two teams combined for a 26-for-116 (22.4 percent) shooting night from the field.

The Knights held Dayton’s McKayla Bickelhaupt to just 3-of-22 shooting from the field and 2-of-6 shooting at the line for eight points.

Dayton returned the favor, holding Amy Arnzen, one of the Knights leading scores, to just one basket on 14 attempts for two points.

“She didn’t shoot the ball particularly well,” Dayton coach Clayton Strong said of Arnzen. “We had a hand in her face. She and Emily Field were the ones that we knew could shoot the basketball and score, so they were the focal point of what we were trying to do tonight.

“But that said, nobody shot the ball particularly well on either side tonight,” Strong said.

Field scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers.

Megan Gregg led the Knights with 14 points on 4-of-21 shooting from the field and two free throws. She hit four treys.

“We knew (Gregg) could (shoot) and we talked about it before the game,” Strong said. “We just weren’t close enough and she took advantage of it.”

Malia Frame led the Bulldogs with 13 points on 5-of-16 field goals and 3-of-6 from the line. She also led her team with nine boards.

Dayton (14-5, 7-2 SE2B) trailed WWVA by a point, 31-30, heading into the final quarter of play, but held the Knights scoreless over the final eight minutes.

“We put the clamps down on them in the fourth quarter and we were fortunate they didn’t hit any shots,” Strong said.

Dayton is a half-game behind first-place DeSales (13-4, 7-1) in league standings and has locked up second place heading into districts.

The Bulldogs visit Tri-Cities Prep Saturday night in their final game of the regular season.
