WALLA WALLA — Whitman swimmer Galen Sollom-Brotherton has been named the Northwest Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance in Whitman’s win Saturday against Whitworth.
Sollom-Brotherton took first in three individual races and swam a leg on the Missionaries’ winning relay team that provided the decisive margin over the Pirates, who had not lost a dual meet in 14 seasons.
The junior from Dublin, Calif., touched the wall first in the 1,650 Freestyle (16:22.08), the 500 Free (4:45.30), and the 400 Individual Medley (4:13.05). His time in the IM is the fastest in the NWC this season, his 1,650 is a season-best and the second fastest in conference to-date, and his 500 time ranks third.
“We are really excited for Galen!” Whitman head coach Jenn Blomme said. “He is so deserving of this award. In fact, each week our captains select a ‘swimmer of the week’ from our team. This week, the team nominated Galen as well, and made a joke about him swimming 2,650 yards in the meet, the most you could possibly do in one day!”
