CLARKSTON — Kristopher Serrano fired a no-hitter in the championship game as Walla Walla Pacific defeated Walla Walla Valley 1-0 to complete an undefeated run through the District 5 Little League 11-year-old baseball tournament here Monday.
Pacific now advances to the Washington state tournament that begins July 20 in Port Orchard.
Serrano needed 69 pitches to complete six innings in Monday’s title game. He struck out eight and walked just one.
Walla Walla Valley pitcher Jacob Wallace was nearly his equal as he worked all five innings, allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two.
Walla Walla Pacific began tournament play Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Walla Walla Valley and defeated host Asotin County 14-1 on Sunday to reach Monday’s finals. Walla Walla Pacific rebounded with an 18-1 victory over North Franklin County and a 13-3 win over Asotin County in a pair of Sunday loser-out games to earn its rematch with rival Walla Walla Pacific.
Valley would have needed to beat Pacific twice on Monday to claim top honors in the double-elimination tournament.
Walla Walla Pacific scored the only run of the championship game in the bottom of the second inning.
Serrano, Gavin Wolcott and Anthony Arroyo hit consecutive singles, but Serrano was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on Arroyo’s single. Wolcott reached third on the play and scored on a passed ball.
In Sunday’s victory over Asotin County, three Pacific pitchers — Anthony Senne, Dylan Ashbeck and Serrano — combined on a two-hitter and nine strikeouts.
Hunter Polley stroked three hits to lead a 12-hit Pacific offensive attack against Asotin County. Senne and Carson McClure added two hits each.
“We struggled to hit the ball in our two games against Valley, but our pitching was great all weekend,” Pacific manager Nathan Ferraro said. “We threw strike after strike and only gave up one run. And our defense was really solid, too.
“In games like these your pitching and defense have more pressure, but the kids stayed loose the whole weekend. I’m really proud of them and they deserved this.”
