WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Sweets’ bats were as hot as the 100-degree temperature Monday night at Borleske Stadium.

The West Coast League Sweets racked up 15 hits in an 11-4 non-league baseball victory over the visiting Portland Lobos.

Matt Mendenhall and Bret Helton led the assault with three hits each. Mendenhall had a single and two doubles, drove in a run and scored twice while Helton singled, doubled and tripled while also garnering one RBI and two runs scored.

Luke Persico contributed a double and a triple and knocked in three runs while scoring once. Scott Silva added a pair of singles, two RBIs and a run scored.

John Skrbec and Zach Reay also singled twice each as no fewer than six Sweets players accrued multiple hits. Skrbec scored once while Reay crossed the plate twice and drove in a run.

The win gives Walla Walla its third victory in as many tries in non-league games. The Sweets have scored 41 runs in three non-WCL match-ups this season. And they are now alone in second place in the North Division standings, one game behind the Victoria HarbourCats.

The Sweets return to league action tonight against the Kitsap BlueJackets. First pitch at Borleske Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
