Tree removal work closes Jubilee Lake Campground

PENDLETON — A delay in a hazard tree removal project will keep Jubilee Lake Campground closed for the Fourth of July holiday.

Recent rainstorms forced the contractor to shut down operations, Umatilla National Forest Walla Walla District Ranger Mike Rassbach said in a release. The campground, located 12 miles north of Tollgate, is now scheduled to open July 12.

“The soft, saturated ground prevented any heavy equipment use off of the main roads,” said Rassbach. The return of warm weather will help to dry things out, but not in time to complete the work by Independence Day.

Several other campgrounds in the area will be open and operating for the holiday weekend including Target Meadows, Woodward and Woodland campgrounds. Dispersed camping along forest roads is also an option, Rassbach said.

More than 350 hazard trees throughout the 50-acre recreation area need to be removed before the campground can be opened for the summer season.
