Walla Walla Cubs finish fifth at Wood Bat Classic

MT. SPOKANE, Wash. — The Walla Walla Cubs 16U squad finished up the 17U Spokane-Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic with a 3-2 record and fifth place here Saturday.

The Cubs shut out the Helena Representatives, 5-0, in their tourney finale with Lowden Smith going the distance on the mound.

“Lowden pitched a great game on short rest to get us the victory,” Cubs coach Kevin McNeil said. “Lowden got stronger as the game went on with his fastball and command of his curveball, which he used to get 10 strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.

“It was nice to see the kids execute hit-and-runs and get down quality sacrifice bunts in this game,” he said. “It was nice to finish strong in a very competitive tournament this weekend. The coaches were happy to came away with three victories out of five games against older teams.”

On Friday, the Cubs knocked off the Sunnyside Griz, 10-2, and were destroyed by Whalley Juniors out of Surrey, British Columbia, 10-3.

Sunnyside was no match for the Cubs, as Walla Walla’s Kyle Gradwohl threw seven innings, striking out 11. He walked only two, and gave up two runs on two hits.

Whalley ransacked the Cubs while nothing went right for them.

“The kids were reminded in the this game that the ball will not always bounce our way,” McNeil said, “and that you have to be mentally tough to bounce back and get the next play.”

On Thursday, the Cubs pummeled the Lewis Clark Tigers, 9-1, and fell to the Mt. Spokane Wild, 10-1.

The Cubs scored nine times against the Tigers on only two hits, three errors and nine walks.

Smith pitched well for Walla Walla and held his opponents to three hits and a single run.

The 10-1 loss to the Wild ended a 10-game winning streak for the Cubs.

“The Wild was the best team that we’ve faced all year,” McNeil said.

The Cubs, 17-9, host the Milton-Freewater Blazers for a 3 p.m. twin bill Tuesday at Murr Field.
