Walla Walla police arrest man after July 4 pursuit

WALLA WALLA — Police arrested a 35-year-old man on investigation of felony eluding after an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop July 4 on Isaacs Avenue.

According to a Walla Walla police report, an officer attempted to stop Stephen D. Bennett, who was driving a black Pontiac Grand Am at about 5:53 p.m..

Bennett initially pulled into the New York Store parking lot, then accelerated back onto Isaacs. The officer reported Bennett was traveling in excess of 65-mph and ran a red light crossing Tausick Way before continuing east onto Mill Creek Road.

Bennett then turned right onto Seven Mile Road, where he and a female passenger abandoned the Grand Am at the base of a hill, police said.

Police and Walla Walla County Sheriff’s deputies found Bennett hiding in tall grass in a dry creek bed. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation after he complained of knee pain and asthma, according to police.

He was lodged at the Walla Walla County Jail on investigation of attempting to elude, third-degree driving while suspended and two warrants. Bail was set at $41,000.
