WALLA WALLA — Chase Copenhaver slugged a home run and the Milton-Freewater Blazers outlasted the Walla Walla Cubs 16-and-under team 6-5 in eight innings here Tuesday in the first game of a summer baseball doubleheader.
The Cubs rebounded in the second game for a 12-2 victory as Jordan Olivares went deep for the Walla Wallans.
“The Milton-Freewater pitcher kept us off balance in the first game until the later innings,” Cubs coach Kevin McNeil said. “By the time our bats came alive it was too late to secure the victory.
“But we came out and scored early in the second game. And it was nice to see Havin Heytvelt and Guy Spalinger pitch great games in the doubleheader.”
Spalinger pitched the first seven innings of the opener before giving way to Koty Hano, who was touched for a single run in the top of the eighth as the Blazers plated the eventual winning run. Heytvelt went the distance on the hill in the second game and yielded just two hits.
Lowden Smith hammered a home run and two doubles to pace an 11-hit Cubs attack in the first game. Christian Warner added a triple and a single, and Hano chipped in with a pair of singles.
Smith kept up his hot hitting in the second game with three triples and Warner tripled and singled.
After hitting a home run in the first game, the Blazers’ Copenhaver accounted for his team’s only hits in the second game with a single and a double.
The Cubs travel to Yakima this weekend for the 17-and-under Red Hawk Classic at East Valley High School. The Walla Wallans are matched against Prosser at 1 p.m. Thursday in their first game.
Meanwhile, the Walla Walla Cubs’ 14-and-under team just returned from Yakima where it won three-of-four games to finish third in the Red Hawks 14-and-under tourney.
The Cubs began play with an 8-4 victory over the Kennewick Heat, downed the Northwest Blaze 9-1, suffered an 11-3 defeat at the hands of the Ellensburg White and topped the Bullates of Pullman-Colfax 9-1 in the third-place game.
Nick Zehner, Hayden White and Silas Shumate stroked two singles each in the win over Kennewick, and Connor Lemma had two singles in the win over the Northwest Blaze. In the loss to Ellensburg, Zehner, Lemma, Cody Worden and Michael Chavez each singled once to account for the Cubs’ only four hits in the game.
Zehner and Shumate had two singles each in the third-place win over Pullman-Colfax while Shumate, Zehner and Jacob Dunn combined on a two-hitter.
“The kids played their best tournament of the season,” McNeil said of his 14-and-under team.
The team is now 16-18 with one tie on the season and finishes the year at the Pullman Summer Classic beginning Friday when it faces the Bomber Baseball Club and Potlach, Idaho. The Cubs play the Latah County Warriors and the Missoula Outlaws in a pair of Saturday games.
