Walla Walla School Board candidate withdraws too late to remove name from ballot

WALLA WALLA — The only primary election with more than two candidates in Walla Walla County won’t be a top-two primary after all, despite three names being on the ballot.

One of the three candidates for the Walla Walla school board director 1 position, Brent Barberich, said he is withdrawing from the race due to unforeseen medical issues with his son. The two remaining candidates, Sam Wells and Joshua Gonzales, are still running. The current office holder, Daniel Hess, is not seeking re-election.

But although Barberich has pulled out, it is too late to take his name off the Aug. 6 ballot, said Dave Valiant, county elections supervisor. The deadline for candidates to withdraw was May 20, the Monday after filing week closed.

Military and overseas ballots have already been mailed, and ballots will be mailed July 19 to the remaining school district voters, Valiant said.
