A grass fire at Fort Walla Walla on Thursday burned 1.5 acres near the outdoor amphitheater around noon. The cause was attributed to a model rocket launching.
Station Two firefighters put out a small treetop fire near Walla Walla Community College on Thursday around 3 p.m. Firefighters used hoes, chain saws and foam to knock down poplar trees in an area approximately 20 feet square. The cause of the fire is unknown.

A interrupted burglary ended up with a foot pursuit of two suspects across the state line near the 900 block of Locher Road. Deputies were called to the 700 block of Locher Road around 2 p.m. Thursday. According to a worker, he saw two men taking tools from a shed. But when the men took off in their vehicle, it broke down about two blocks away. Deputies spotted the men and chased them toward a residence on Fruitvale Road. One of the suspects, Paul Lyle Sheets, 48, was found in a field. Sheets was transported to Walla Walla General Hospital, where he was checked for heat exhaustion and later arrested. The other suspect, Krystian Thomas Allen, 21, was arrested by Umatilla County Sheriff’s deputies.
A Northwest Fourth Avenue resident reported her children’s bicycles stolen Thursday overnight.
A South Main Street resident reported an air compressor was stolen.
A cellphone was stolen Thursday at the aquatics center while the youth was swimming.
A large thunderstorm Thursday around 1 a.m. resulted in two small grass fires south of Milton-Freewater. Milton-Freewater Rural Fire Department crews were called to the first fire at the 00 block of Highway 11 and a second fire near Highway 11 and Dry Creek. No injuries or damaged structures were reported. The cause was listed as lightning strikes.
