SELAH, Wash. — Walla Walla got the runs it needed Thursday night, but not the defense as the Griz fell 11-10 to Spokane Athletic Supply in the opening game of the Selah Tournament.
The Griz, an American Legion Class A team, committed seven errors in the loss.
“Defensively, we just didn’t play very well,” Griz coach Ryan Van Dyke said. “A lot of them (errors) were overthrows, a couple of them were fielding. We just gave up extra bases and got guys on base.”
Spokane took a 3-1 lead through four innings, but Walla Walla rallied for six runs in the fifth to take control of the game.
Nelson Carpenter, Joey Yenney and Zach Leahy each batted RBI singles and Andrew Feistner sent a ball over the left fielder’s head with two outs and the bases loaded for a three-RBI double to cap the rally.
But Spokane answered with a five-run frame of their own, built largely with the help of Griz errors, in the bottom of the inning.
“It was one of those things where we just couldn’t find outs, we couldn’t get guys out,” Van Dyke said. “We were just killing ourselves.”
After the dust settled Spokane held a 8-7 lead.
Walla Walla tied the game with a run in the sixth, but Spokane countered with two more runs to again take the lead, 10-8, going into the seventh.
Justin Elsom, who went 4-for-5 as the Griz leadoff man, hit a two-RBI double to tie the game in the seventh. But Walla Walla wasn’t able to force extra innings, as Spokane’s Johnny Sage hit a walk-off double with runners at first and second in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
“The guys battled back,” Van Dyke said. “Losing it the way we have, it’s tough. The kids are pretty disappointed, but it shows how resilient they are, coming back and taking the lead.”
Walla Walla falls to 19-15 with the loss, but will continue pool play at the Selah Tournament with a game today against the Yakima Rookie Beetles at 4 p.m. The Griz conclude pool play Saturday with a game against Pasco at 1:30 p.m.
