SELAH, Wash. — The Walla Walla Griz bounced back from an opening 11-10 loss to Spokane Thursday to win Friday and Saturday here at the Selah Tournament.

The Griz blanked the Yakima Rookie Beetles 11-0 on Friday and scored four times in the seventh to complete pool play and pull out a 6-5 win over the Pasco Rebels Saturday.

The Griz finished 2-1 in pool play and in a three-way tie for first in the pool. Tiebreakers landed the Griz in the third-fourth place game against Spokane’s Warehouse Performance today at 3 p.m.

On Friday, the Griz took advantage of five Yakima errors to post the 11-0 whitewash on only five hits. Walla Walla scored four times in the first and added seven more in the second to coast home. Nelson Carpenter pitched all five innings and blanked Yakima on only one hit — a leadoff bunt single in the first inning. Five different Griz collected the Walla Walla hits.

On Saturday, Griz starting pitcher Joe Yenney got off to a slow start as Pasco jumped to a 3-0 lead after two. Yenney righted the ship and blanked the Rebels until his offense could take over in the seventh.

Mitch Lesmeister started the Walla Walla rally with a one-out single. Carpenter beat out an infield hit. Justin Elsom plated two with a single, and Anders Davidson tripled Elsom home. Yenney picked up Elsom with a ground out and the Griz took a 6-3 lead to the home seventh.

The Rebels scored twice and had the tying run on, but Lesmeister came on in relief of Yenney to get the last outs and send the Griz to today’s battle for third.

“Yenney got dialed in (after the second),” Griz coach Ryan Van Dyke said. “He did a really good job, and then Lesmeister closed out the game.”

Walla Walla improves to 21-15 on the season.

“We played tough baseball,” Van Dyke said. “We had to work hard to come back (Saturday), and then we had to hold the lead. We are turning the corner and putting it all together.”
