Cooking competitions simmering for Sweet Onion Festival

Have a killer recipe for a Walla Walla Sweet Onion dish. Like to get paid in onions?

Then organizers of this weekend’s Walla Walla Sweet Onion Festival have an offer for you.

It’s not too late to sign up to compete in three cooking competitions slated for Saturday’s festival. A Sweet Onion salad competition starts at 11:30 a.m. That’s followed an hour later by a Sweet Onion salsa competition, which will then be followed another hour later by a Sweet Onion dessert competition.

According to the entry form, dishes will be judged on appearance, Sweet Onions as the main ingredients, flavor and texture.

Participants are asked to bring their dish — or three samples of it — to the competition tent on Main Street between Third and Fourth avenues 15 minutes prior to the start of each contest.

Winners will receive cash and onions in compensation. Notoriety may also be an eventual prize. Participants are asked to share their recipes for potential use in a 30th anniversary cookbook. There is no cost to participate, but participants are asked to enter ahead of time. Entry forms are available by calling 525-1031.
