Donald H. Lechner, Sr. passed away July 12, 2013, at Eagle Springs Memory Care, College Place, Washington.

Donald was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Emil & Louise (Hermesch) Lechner. He came from a large family consisting of nine brothers and sisters, all living together on a family farm. He attended school in Senaca, Kansas.

After being discharged from the US Army, he moved to Livermore, California where he met and married the love of his life; Barbara Reiber. They were married in Reno, Nevada in 1966. After leaving California, they settled in Walla Walla.

Donald worked for Eddie Lusk doing brake and alignment services. After several years of working for Eddie Lusk, he went to work for the VA Hospital as the lead groundskeeper until he retired. During his employment with the VA Hospital, he was instrumental in establishing the now known little league field on the grounds of the VA Hospital.

Donald was extremely active in his children’s lives. He was a Cub Scout leader as well as coaching his children’s baseball and soccer teams. Many times he took the neighborhood kids fishing, camping and hunting.

Donald had many interests; he was president of the Coin Club in Walla Walla and Milton Freewater, loved playing cards, dancing (oh, how the man loved to dance); he was a member of the local Elks and Odd Fellows and a member of the Rifleman’s Association. Most of all, his family was of utmost importance.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara; his son, Donald Lechner and fiancé Jill; daughter, Karen Kelly and husband Jerry; his grandchildren, Ashley, Zach, Kyler, Bailee, Quiara, Alina, Danielle and his great grandson, the latest pride and joy of his life, Bently. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

A very special thank you to Dr. Jack Hoehn and wife Deanne for twenty-two years of health care. The family would also like to thank the staff at Eagle Springs Memory Care.

There will be a memorial sharing service held at Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens, 300 SE Myra Road at 11 am, Saturday, July 20, 2013. Following the service, there will be a reception at the home of Donald and Barbara Lechner. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or Epilepsy Foundation through Mountain View- Colonial Dewitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
