RICHLAND — The Walla Walla Griz’s stay at the Central Washington Single A American Legion League district baseball tournament didn’t last long here Sunday at Richland High School
The Hanford Flames outlasted the Griz 3-2 in the opening game of the single-elimination tournament.
Hanford went on to face Richland later Sunday in the championship game, with a berth in the state tournament hanging in the balance. Results of that game were not available.
Walla Walla entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed. Hanford was the second seed and Richland earned the No. 1 seed based on its regular-season league championship.
The Griz finished their season at 26-16.
Walla Walla outhit Hanford 10-6, led by Nelson Carpenter’s three-hit game and two hits each by Joe Yenney and Dexter Aichele. Carpenter scored both Walla Walla runs.
The Griz enjoyed a brief 1-0 lead when Carpenter led off the game with a base hit, was bunted to second by Justin Elsom, reached third on Anders Davidson’s infield grounder and scored on Yenney’s first hit.
After the Flames assumed a 2-1 lead with a pair of scores in the bottom of the second, Walla Walla knotted the score in the fifth. Once again Carpenter led off with a single, was balked to second, took third on a passed ball and scored on Davidson’s hit.
Walla Walla had runners on first and second with no one out in the sixth but failed to score. And Carpenter led off the seventh with his third hit of the game, successfully stole second base but was thrown out at third when he attempted to advance on a short passed ball.
A single, a hit batter and a two-out single produced the Flames’ winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. There was no play at the plate as Hanford won in walk-off fashion.
