Idena Ward

Nov. 21, 1914 — July 14, 2013

Idena Ward of Milton-Freewater passed away July 14, 2013, at the age of 98 years, surrounded by her family. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel in Milton-Freewater with Pastor Jeff Beazley officiating. Interment will be at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery followed by a reception at the Bethel Baptist Church, 209 SW 1st, Milton-Freewater. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be made in Idena’s memory to donor’s choice through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.

Idena was born on Nov. 21, 1914, the daughter of Clarence Cox and Emma (Starr) Cox in McPherson, Kan. Idena attended school in Towanda, Kan., where she moved as a little girl in a covered wagon.

She met Leland Ward at a picnic in 1932 and they were married Feb. 25, 1933. She loved to go on picnics, to dances and to visit friends and relatives. Idena and Leland spent the first several years they were married farming. They then worked their way west working in Idaho and then on to Oregon. Idena and Leland worked day and night building by their own hands their home, where she lived independently for the remainder of her life.

Idena worked at Mac-Hi for 27 years with most of that time as a cook and then head cook. She is fondly remembered for starting the cinnamon roll program that students enjoyed on their morning breaks. Her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as many “adopted” grandchildren in her life. In addition to family, she took a lot of pride in her vegetable garden and many flower beds. She received “yard of the month” numerous times.

Idena is survived by 10 grandchildren, Casey Hahn, Detricia Hahn, Jolene Riggs, Cynthia Wagner, Frank Ward, Sheri Rychtarik, Shirley Bruner, Jeff Ward, Kenneth Ward, Ron Ward; and 27 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; and her son-in-law, Ray Hahn. She was preceded in death by her husband; and her sons, Dean and Robert Ward; and her daughter, Norene (Ward) Hahn; as well as her parents; and her sisters, Julia (Cox) Nelson, Irene (Cox) Richey and Dorothy (Cox) Sheperd.
