WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla 16U Cubs wrapped up their season Tuesday with a doubleheader against Pendleton at Murr Sports Park, and pitcher Kyle Gradwohl saved his best for last in the opener.
Gradwohl struck out seven and walked none while scattering five hits to pitch a complete-game shutout in game one, 8-0. Walla Walla continued its domination through the nightcap, holding Pendleton to one run in a 5-1 victory that saw the Cubs’ season end on a high note.
“Kyle Gradwohl pitched his best game of the year with a complete-game shootout of a good hitting team,” Cubs coach Kevin McNeil said. “He did a great job keeping their batters off balance all game with his pitches. He was working great with Havin Heytvelt, who called a great game behind the plate.”
The Cubs finish the season at 26-17-1.
“It was nice to see the kids end the summer season with a sweep of a good team,” McNeil said. “The coaches are quite happy with how the kids played all year versus older kids and improved in each game we played.”
Talen Larsen and Guy Spalinger combined to hold Pendleton to one run on four hits in the nightcap.
“It was nice to see Talen Larsen came out and have a good last outing of the year on the mound,” McNeil said. “He has been struggling a little bit lately and we knew he would turn it around soon. Guy Spalinger came in a pitched his best all year to preserve the win for Talen.”
Walla Walla’s offense was up to the task as well Tuesday, putting up 13 runs on 15 hits in the twin bill.
Lowden Smith led the way in the opener with two doubles and a single. Cameron Spencer led with a double and a single in the nightcap.
