Aldrich wins gold at National Senior Games

WALLA WALLA — After dominating events at the state level in Washington, Idaho and Alaska, Walla Walla athlete Suzie Aldrich picked up a gold medal recently at the National Senior Games held in Cleveland, Ohio.

Aldrich, 70, won the age 70-74 50-yard backstroke in a time of 42.15 seconds. Her time places her in fourth place for the best swim for her age group in Senior Games history.

Aldrich also won silver in the 100 back with a time of 1:36.18. She placed fifth in the 200 back with a time of 3:45.68 and swam a 39.23 in the 50 freestyle.

“It’s my first National, it’s my first award,” Aldrich said in a news release. “It hasn’t sunk in yet.”

Aldrich first began her swimming career at the Walla Walla YMCA. She had never swam competitively before competing in the 2011 Eastern Washington Senior Games, held at the Walla Walla YMCA.

“I have a great support system at the Walla Walla YMCA,” she said. “They are awesome. That is my anchor.”
