MISSION — A body was found Thursday in the Umatilla River near Mission that authorities suspect to be Angela Billy, who has been missing since May 22, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation said in a news release.
Public Safety Director Ray Denny said Friday that the body was found by two horseback riders who were searching for Billy.
The riders notified tribal police of the discovery at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release.
A recovery team used wet suits and swift water gear to retrieve the body early Friday morning. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Umatilla Tribal Police had been searching for Billy after family members filed a missing person report a few days before the body was found, the release said.
Billy, 41, is a member of the Yakama Nation. She is also known as Angela Shippentower and Babette Shippentower.
Because Billy’s family members could not positively identify the body, officials will use dental records and DNA to try to determine the person’s identity.
Meanwhile, tribal police continue to ask residents for any information about Billy’s disappearance.
