Bears go 2-1 in Border Wars classic

COEUR D’ALENE — The Walla Walla Bears improved their early-season record to 4-1 after posting a 2-1 record during the Border Wars round robin baseball classic that ended here Saturday at Ramsey Field.

The Bears defeated the Spokane Northstars, 11-4, in their last game of the classic on Saturday.

Earlier on Saturday, Walla Walla dropped a 10-3 decision to the Spokane Blue Devils.

On Friday, the Bears blanked the host Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen, 3-0, as A.J. Carkner tossed a four-hitter and struck out 13.

Daniel Camacho, Moe Handcox, Tyler Hamilton, Spencer Cordeiro, and Scott Kramer had two hits apiece in Saturday’s win while Dylan Shuler fanned five and walked four over seven innings.

“We did a nice job of bouncing back,” Walla Walla coach Brian Kitamura said after Saturday’s triumph. “One thing we’re improving on is being consistent and playing throughout all seven innings. Dylan Shuler worked out of several tough situations. He threw the ball really well and gave us what we needed. He did a good job of spotting up when he needed to.

“A.J. had outstanding command of his fastball and slider,” Kitamura said. “It’s the best we’ve seen him throw this summer. He was able to throw all three of his pitches (fastball, slider and changeup) for strikes.”

The Bears host the Hanford Flames for a doubleheader today at 1 p.m. at Walla Walla Community College.
