Feb. 21, 1924 — May 25, 2013
Harold M. Buckey died peacefully May 25, 2013 at home in Walla Walla. The oldest of three boys, Harold was born Feb. 21, 1924, to the Rev. Harold E. Buckey and Eulalia Buckey in Boardman, Ohio. His college was interrupted by WWII, where he served in the Navy, spending most of the time in the Pacific Theater. His father served as Chaplain on the USS New Mexico, Flagship of the Pacific Fleet in WWII. They were both in Okinawa Harbor when the New Mexico was hit with a suicide plane. Harold did not know for several hours that his father had survived the attack.
After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan College in 1948 with a degree in economics he did post graduate work at the University of Illinois. He later received a master’s degree in psychology from San Jose State. He taught psychology and accounting at Santa Ana College, Calif., and served as the counselor to the business department. After retiring in 1990 he pursued his love of tennis, playing the senior tennis circuit in tournaments around the country. He received a National ranking in men’s doubles while in his 70s. He played tennis most of his life and truly loved the game. He loved sports of all kinds enjoying both participating and watching.
He was married over thirty years to his college sweetheart Marie Faust Buckey. They had three children, Stephen Buckey, Boise, Claudia Puccinelli (Arnie), Twain Harte, Calif., and Carol Rasmussen, Madison, Wis.
He married Eleanor Rau in 1982 and they had a thirty-one year marriage. In 2003 they relocated to Walla Walla, and Harold enjoyed playing cards at Walla Walla Country Club and eating breakfast at Tommy’s. Harold and Eleanor shared a love of stories, films and music. The last few years they would watch a movie or concert on TV every night after dinner, making endless trips to the Walla Walla Public Library, purchasing DVDs, and streaming them instantly to their television.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; his three children and his son-in-law; and his brother, the Rev. David Buckey (Caroline) of Cincinnati, Ohio. He also leaves two step-daughters, Laura Munns (Ron) of Walla Walla, and Stacy Green (Mark) of Enterprise, Ore.; grandchildren, Blake, Mark and David Rasmussen, Sarah and Nicholas Fuller, and Morgan and John Green. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Warren Buckey of Naples, Fla.; and his first wife, Marie Buckey. He gave us all joy, laughter and love.
There will be a private family service in June. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in Harold’s name to Walla Walla City Library earmarked for their film collection through Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
