WALLA WALLA — As coach Barb (KRQQL-Aid) Commare said, it was deja vu for the Walla Walla Sweets Roller Girls Saturday night as they lost to the Rodeo City Roller Girls from Ellensburg at the Walla Walla YMCA in the final moments of the last jam of the roller derby bout.
The Sweets opened up a close bout by jumping to a 145-125 lead, holding Rodeo City at 125 points for five jams, before the last jam lifted the Ellensburg squad to a 157-146 victory.
“It was a tough loss for the team,” Commare said. “We all stood there in disbelief as the jam ended and the realization of what had just happened sunk in. Ultimately, it was my fault that we lost. I should have called a timeout and told my jammer to go easy, play it safe and just run out the clock.”
The Sweets were looking for revenge for their one-point loss to Rodeo City last season. The teams traded the lead throughout the game, with Walla Walla trailing by 10 at halftime. But the Sweets started the second half with a 14-point power jam by Katrina (Blonde Bandita) Suckow as Walla Walla grabbed the 87-83 lead.
The Sweets opened up the 20-point lead late in the bout before Rodeo City’s rally in the final jam.
The Sweets next host Apple City Roller Derby from Wenatchee on June 29 at the Walla Walla YMCA.
