Walla Walla schools honor graduates of distinction

WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla School Board will honor this year’s Graduates of Distinction during an evening reception and ceremony Tuesday.

The public reception will run from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. in the board room of the Walla Walla Public Schools administration building, at 364 S. Park St. The ceremony will be followed by the School Board’s regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Each year, Walla Walla Public Schools recognizes people who have distinguished themselves in their communities, professions or careers and continue to bring honor to the district. The reception is open to the public. To be recognized are Carol Minnick Santa, Class of 1962; Daniel J. Reid, Class of 1974; and Craig Nelson, Class of 1981.

About this year’s honorees:

Carol Minnick Santa is educational director and owner of Montana Academy, providing education and support for troubled youth. Santa also created Project CRISS (Creating Independence through Student-owned Strategies). She was nominated by classmate Judy Chamberlain Holloway. Her most inspirational Walla Walla Public Schools staff members were Donald Kamp (math), Robert Schweger (drama) and Elizabeth Kirkman (Latin/grammar).

Daniel J. Reid has worked for Opp & Seibold General Construction Inc. in Walla Walla for 22 years and currently is the general manager. He has been very involved in local civic, athletic and non-profit organizations since 1991. Reid was nominated by his sister-in-law, Hali R. Myers. Reid’s most inspirational staff member was his high school English/literature teacher, Richard “Dick” Poole.

Craig Nelson and his brother Reid are co-presidents of Nelson Irrigation Corporation in Walla Walla. Nelson has been very involved in local athletic and non-profit organizations, and he spearheaded a campaign in 2004 to renovate the Garrison Middle School track. Nelson’s nominators were his wife, Mindy, and children: Luke, Bailey and Madison. Craig’s most inspirational staff members were wrestling coach/ math teacher Al Sievertsen and track coach/math teacher Ron Huntington.
