Balboa benefits Humane Society with doggie contest

Balboa Winery is going to the dogs. For a “Best in Show” contest, that is.

The southside winery will open its arms June 15 from noon-3 p.m. to four-legged friends in a three-hour event and fundraiser for the Blue Mountain Humane Society.

Dogs will be judged in 12 categories, including Waggiest Tail, Best Underbite, and Looks Most Like Owner.

The deadline to enter is this Saturday. The fee is $25 to enter a dog into one competition category. Additional categories are $10 each.

The cost includes a glass of wine or a tasting flight. Andrae’s Kitchen will be onsite throughout the afternoon to serve hot dog-inspired fare. “Best in Show” swag will be available for purchase, too, including T-shirts and dog tags. Artist Amy Glase will auction off a custom painting of the auction winner’s dog. All profits will benefit the Blue Mountain Humane Society.

Those who don’t have dogs competing shouldn’t be deterred from attending, organizers say. Spectators are encouraged to join in the festivities at Balboa, 4169 Peppers Bridge Road.

The full list of categories for competition is: Most Handsome Dog, Lusty Lady, Best Rescue Dog, Golden Oldie (7 and older), Best Trick, Waggiest Tail, Best Underbite, Looks Most Like Owner, Best Catch, Best Smile, Best Toy Dog and Creative Grooming.

Entry forms can be downloaded from the Balboa site — — or can be picked up at the winery or Humane Society.
