WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Griz defeated the Milton-Freewater Blazers, 4-2, Wednesday at Murr Sports Complex in a non-league summer baseball single game.
“I thought we played a very fundamentally sound baseball game,” Griz coach Ryan Van Dyke said. “We had fundamental pitching, great base running and timely hits that got us our runs.”
The Griz built a three-run lead before the Blazers got on the board with a single run in the fifth inning.
Walla Walla’s Anders Davidson and Justin Elsom took advantage of back-to-back errors in the first to reach base, and Joe Yenney hit a bases-clearing double to the left-center gap to give the Griz a 2-0 lead.
Walla Walla added another run in the third when Alex Lybbert singled, stole second and scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Elsom.
Nelson Carpenter kept the Blazers scoreless for four and two-thirds innings, striking out five and issuing two walks before being replaced by Joey Camacho in the fourth.
“It was a good day,” Van Dyke said. “(Carpenter) just had a lot of control. It was his first outing of the summer and he looked really good.”
The Blazers scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth, but Walla Walla pushed another run across in the sixth to regain its three-run edge.
Montana Arceo led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Gus Calzaretta double to left-center.
“We took advantage,” said Van Dyke, whose team stole four bases on the day. “That really helped our hitters by getting runners in scoring position.”
The Blazers scored another run in the seventh on a leadoff double and a groundout, but weren’t able to put together a multiple-run rally.
The Griz (4-2) next play Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Tri-Cities Badgers in Pasco.
