WALLA WALLA — Scott Silva collected three hits and knocked in five runs Saturday night to lead the West Coast League’s Walla Walla Sweets to a 13-3 victory over the Far West League’s San Francisco Seals in summer baseball action before 1,062 fans at Borleske Stadium.
Silva bounced an RBI single to center field in the first inning, belted a run-scoring triple in the third, laced a two-run double in the fourth, and drove in his final run with an eighth-inning ground ball to second base.
In all, the Sweets registered 11 hits in the game.
“He had a good night,” Walla Walla coach J.C. Biagi said. “It was good all the way around. We got some good swings on a lot of balls.
“For the most part, guys are getting comfortable with two strikes,” Biagi said. “They are recognizing the breaking ball. They’re getting the confidence to say, ‘That guy is not going to beat me.’”
Left-hander Drew Christina struck out seven and walked an equal number over six innings while notching the win. He tossed no-hit ball over the first five innings before yielding three runs and one hit — an RBI single to Myles Hiebert — in the sixth.
“Drew was not at his best,” Biagi said. “He threw a lot of balls out of the zone. We want him to be efficient and become the pitcher he’s capable of being.”
Luke Persico capped a three-run Walla Walla rally in the third with an RBI bloop single to center that gave the Sweets a 5-0 lead.
Beau Bozett followed Silva’s fourth-inning two-bagger with a run-producing hit that swelled the Walla Walla advantage to 8-0.
The Sweets tallied five times in the eighth. Dominic Miroglio drew a bases-loaded walk, Bozett parachuted an RBI single to right after Silva’s grounder, Reggie Southall contributed an infield groundout that scored a run, and Connor Holbrook rapped a base knock to right that brought home the final run of the contest.
Bret Helton and Colin Serkowski combined to hurl one-hit ball in relief of Christina. They teamed up to fan five Seals batters.
