KENNEWICK — The Walla Walla Bruins rolled along here Sunday at Roy Johnson Field, defeating the Kennewick Phantoms 12-6 and 5-1 in a Central Washington Junior American Legion League baseball doubleheader.

The sweep extended Walla Walla’s record to 10-1 overall and 9-0 in league play. The Bruins are at home Wednesday when they entertain the Milton-Freewater Blazers in a 6 p.m. non-league doubleheader at Murr Field. The team is idle over the weekend.

Kal Gray was an offensive juggernaut for the Bruins as he collected seven hits on the day, drove home six runs and scored four times. Gray pounded out two doubles and a single in the first game, and his fourth and final hit in the second game was a two-run home run in the fifth inning that concluded the Bruins’ scoring for the day.

Ali Buentello joined Gray with three hits in the first game, scored three times and drove in a run. Ryan Kimball had a single and a double and two RBIs while Colby Watilo, David Pontarolo and Logan Cordeiro added two hits each.

Kyle Barker was outstanding on the mound for Walla Walla in the second game as he went the distance and allowed just three hits while strikout out four and walking two.

“He was getting his breaking ball over for strikes and their hitters were uncomfortable the entire game,” Bruins coach Jason Parsons said of Barker’s showing. “He had a low pitch count, and the only run he allowed came in the first inning on a dropped pop fly.”

Pontarolo and Reid Magnaghi had two hits apiece in the second game.
