Community won at Battle of the Badge

The first Battle of the Badge baseball game took place June 1 at Borleske Stadium.

While the game pitted law-enforcement officers against firefighters, the night was all about coming together for the community.

None of the players were professional ball players, but they did put in months of hard work preparing for the game. We didn’t want to let the community down by not putting on a good show. We were assisted by the Walla Walla Sweets, who not only organized the game but also provided a coach for each team.

Our brothers and sisters in blue may have won the game, but our community was the real winner. A total of $24,000 was raised for three very deserving local charities.

Law enforcement chose to play for the Walla Walla Area Crime Watch, while the firefighters chose to split their portion of the proceeds between the Blue Mountain Girls Softball Association and the Walla Walla YMCA Youth Sustaining Campaign.

Not only did the game benefit a good cause, but we were all able to have a little fun participating. The law enforcement side surprised us with a smoke grenade during the game (which firefighter Luke Mohney was able to take advantage of by hitting the ball directly into the cloud).

And we were able to rally some of the younger spectators to go fishing for cops with donuts cast over their dugout. The law enforcement players were great sports, as some of the kids “hooked” one on the line or had a donut come back with a bite taken out.

Congratulations to the law enforcement team for winning the game and for showing such sportsmanship.

We are proud to be able to serve our community alongside our law enforcement counterparts. From all of us at Local 404 who played in the game, helped out behind the scenes, or just had a great time bringing our families to watch, we appreciate the Walla Walla community for showing its support in such a big way.
