WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Griz dominated their foes at the dish and on the mound here Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Sweet Invitational Tournament, beating the Round Table Saxons 19-0 in five innings and 15-5 over the Moscow/Pullman Mustangs in seven frames.

The Griz walked 15 times against the Saxons, scoring on 10 of those free passes. Walla Walla then pounded out 13 hits in the win over the Mustangs.

“Our guys were dialed in,” Griz coach Ryan Van Dyke said. “It was nice, very nice.”

The Griz were bouyed by a efficient performance from starting pitcher Mitch Lesmeister in game one.

“He kept his pitch count real low and that helps in a tournament like this when one guy can go the whole game,” said Van Dyke of Lesmeister’s performanc. “Then Joey Camacho threw one of the best games that he has thrown this summer in the second game.”

Lesmeister threw the complete game, one-hit shutout with five strikeouts. He allowed one walk. Camacho wasn’t helped any by four Griz errors in game two, but only allowed four runs on six hits.

Walla Walla put together a ferocious rally in inning one against the Saxons with 11 runs on five walks, three singles and a two-RBI triple from Nelson Carpenter.

Anders Davidson and Lesmeister each contributed RBI singles.

Andrew Feistner added a bases-loaded walk while Camacho and Davidson smacked sacrifice flies for RBIs.

Catcher and leadoff man Alex Lybbert worked three walks and smacked a 2-RBI double in the first game.

Carpenter, Justin Elsom, Davidson and Joe Yenney — No. 1-through-4 in the lineup against the Mustangs — each slugged two hits.

The Griz chipped away at the scoreboard in the first four innings, putting up single runs in the first, third and fourth innings and a 2-spot in the second.

But the game was tied at five entering the sixth, when Walla Walla put up nine runs on four hits, two hit-by-pitches, two walks and four Mustang errors.

Carpenter highlighted the inning with a bases-loaded double to bring everyone home.

Dexter Aichele and Yenney each hit RBI singles in the attack.
