WALLA WALLA — Northwest Xplosion ’00 12-and-under girls fastpitch team finished first in the 14U gold bracket in the Sweet Onion Invitational held here over the weekend, finishing the weekend with a 6-0 record in the 16-team tournament.
Xplosion ’00 opened Saturday’s play with a 8-3 victory over the Oregon Young Guns, out of Pendleton. They then faced the Couer d’Alene Crush ’99 and won, 14-6. In the third game on Saturday, Xplosion beat the Washington Mustangs, 8-0.
Xplosion ’00 took the first seed from their pool heading into single elimination play, and in the first game on Sunday, Xplosion hitters collected 13 hits and their pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter in the 10-1 victory over Walla Walla Xplosion ’98.
In the semifinal game, Xplosion ’00 outhit the Hermiston Hurricanes 12-1 as they cruised to a 10-3 victory and claimed their spot in the championship game.
Xplosion ’00 faced the Pendleton Pride in the championship game, who also came into the game with a 5-0 record for the weekend. Xplosion ’00 put up three runs in the third inning and five runs in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead.
Pendleton avoided the mercy rule by hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Xplosion held on for the 9-4 victory to claim the tournament title.
The Xplosion ’00 overall record on the season is now 37-9 and they will be in action again on June 28-30 in the 12U and under NSA State Tournament in Tri-Cities.
