John and Remy Wilcox of Walla Walla celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 14, 2013, at a gathering hosted by their children.
The couple wed June 14, 1963, in Castleford, Idaho. Remy’s maiden name is Barnes.
John was a teacher and coach for 36 years, with 29 years at Whitman College where he coached football, men’s and women’s basketball and served as athletic director.
Prior to that he taught and coached in high schools at Boise and Portland. After retiring from Whitman in 1996, he served as general manager for Blue Mountain Growers for 10 years and retired from there in 2010.
In 1960 John played professional football for the National Champion Philadelphia Eagles.
John farmed an apple and then cherry orchard for 30 years. He served on the McLoughlin High School for eight years and the Blue Mountain Growers Board of Directors for 20 years. He is active in Christ Community Fellowship as elder and teacher.
Remy taught and substituted in Milwaukie and Walla Walla High School districts. She was a speech teacher and director of forensics at Whitman for 10 years and initiated the annual high school speech tournament.
She then worked at Blue Mountain Action Council for 15 years as program manager for youth job training and energy assistance programs. She retired in 1996.
Remy is active in Christ Community Fellowship as a teacher, on the Women’s Council and music team. She volunteered with Life Coaches at the Juvenile Justice Center and is currently in counselor training at Good Samaritan Ministries. Remy has traveled with her daughter to Europe and New York City a number of times.
Both enjoy activities with their family, particularly with their grandchildren.
They have a daughter, Karen Carman of Walla Walla; two sons, Marcus and Michael Wilcox of Walla Walla and seven grandchildren.
