WALLA WALLA — Operation Dry Water will begin this weekend as the national drinking and boating awareness campaign enters its fifth year.
Walla Walla Sheriff’s Office deputies will participate, according to Sheriff John Turner, with emphasis patrols and other educational efforts.
Operation Dry Water began in 2009 as a cooperative effort by law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard to cut down on the number of boating fatalities, which accounts for 1.7 percent of all fatalities in the United States. According to the State Parks Boating Programs, alcohol has been a factor in 30 percent of boating fatalities since 2004.
