WW Griz score 36 runs in twin bill with Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE — After scoring 13 runs over seven innings in the first game of a Central Washington Single A American Legion League baseball doubleheader here Tuesday, the Walla Walla Griz struck for 13 runs in the first inning of the nightcap.

And all it added up to an easy sweep for the Walla Wallans as they crushed the Moses Lake Sun Devils 13-4 and 23-4. The second game was called after three innings at the request of the Moses Lake coach, according to Walla Walla Coach Ryan Van Dyke.

“It was one of those rare things that happens,” Van Dyke explained. “The weather was starting to turn, it was getting late and their coach and I talked. He said, ‘I’m good with this after three innings and it will get you guys home a little earlier.’

“I said, ‘It’s your call,’” Van Dyke added. “And the umpire agreed, so we called it a game.”

The Griz pounded out 20 hits over those three innings in the second game, led by Joe Yenney’s two doubles, two singles and five runs batted in. Yenney also scored twice and was credited with the pitching victory as well.

Mitch Lesmeister added three singles, four runs scored and one RBI, and Dexter Aichele contributed two doubles and a single, drove in four runs and scored three times. Nelson Carpenter, Zach Leahy, Gus Calavaretta and Joey Camach stroked two hits each in the game.

Alex Lybbert doubled, singled twice and scored three times in the first game for the Griz. Montana Arceo stroked a two-run double in the third inning and added a single in the fifth while Wyatt Taylor, Mitch Lesmeister and Carpenter added RBI hits.

Taylor went the distance on the mound, striking out four, walking five and allowing three earned runs.

The Griz improved to 13-8 on the season and take a 2-4 league mark into a pair of games this afternoon at Murr Field against the same Moses Lake team. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

“They are a very young team,” Van Dyke said of the Sun Devils. “I think they’ve won five times on the year, and I know they are 0-6 in league play.”
