TUMWATER, Wash. — Walla Walla golfer Emily Baumgart placed fifth Thursday at the 2013 Junior World State Qualifier to earn a berth at the Calloway Junior World Championships slated for July 16 in San Diego.
Baumgart, who will be a DeSales High School sophomore this fall, carded a nine-over 77-76 — 153 at the state-wide tournament, finishing one stroke out of a cluster of three golfers tied at second place with 152s.
The top four golfers at Thursday’s tournament are invited to the Junior World Championships, which will be held at San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course. Baumgart will be making the trip in place of Ashley Fitzgibbons, who tied for second but will not be attending the tournament.
Bree Wanderscheid, of Goldendale, Wash., won the the qualifier handily, carding a two-under 72-70 — 142.
Baumgart next golfs Monday at a Washington Junior Golf Association tournament at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.
