BELLINGHAM — After suffering a 9-3 defeat at the hands of the Bellingham Bells on Friday, Walla Walla bounced back behind a 15-hit attack to down the Bells 12-2 here Saturday in West Coast League baseball action.
A Spencer O’Neil bases clearing triple ran the Sweets lead to 6-1 in the third inning Saturday night and that was more than enough. O’Neil added a run scoring single in the Sweets fourth and got help from Mike Paulson who knocked in a run with a single, and from Nick Vilter who doubled in another as the Sweets increased the lead to 9-2 after four and coasted home.
Renae Martinez with four hits and O’Neil with three hits and four RBI led the Sweets 15-hit attack. On the defensive side, starting pitcher Sean Silva and three relievers — Matt Hall, Josh Wagner, and Sean-Luke Brija — combined to blank the Bells over the last six innings.
On Friday, Jack Meggs ripped a two-run triple to spark a four-run Bellingham first and the Sweets never recovered. Jarod Gonzales blasted a two-run double for the Sweets in the fifth, but it was not enough on this night.
John Skrbek and Gonzales each had two hits for the Sweets, but the Bells pounded out 12 hits to earn the 9-3 win.
Drew Christina was strong in relief for the Sweets, only allowing a run on four hits, while striking out four and walking a man in 4.2 innings on the mound.
Sweets starter Danny Zandona ended his night allowing eight earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work, taking his first loss of the year.
Walla Walla stands at 12-9 in league play and has a travel day today before hosting the Portland Lobos Monday night at 7 at Borleske in a non-league contest.
