A businessman with a taste for adventure is behind the new “action-sports store” on East Alder Street.
Shane Harris celebrates the December opening of his 509 Sports with a grand opening this weekend. Harris is a veteran bicycle racer, downhill skier, boarder and inventor. Among his proud accomplishments was the construction of an electric car capable of speeds faster than 100 mph using two conventional batteries.
His latest creation: The bike and skate shop just off the corner of Wilbur Avenue and Alder Street.
The store carries major brands of road bikes, mountain bikes and BMX offerings, according to an announcement. Raleigh, KHS, Free Agent, Sunday, Stolen and Subrosa are all represented. The business also carries replacement parts, upgrades and accessories, as well as cycling wearables.
One signature of 509 Sports is the ski hill snow-bike known as “Powder Hound.” The piece combines the attributes of a mountain bike with a snowboard so the rider can steer into the thrills, the release explained. Powder Hound snow-bikes are available to rent daily so interested customers can try them out before purchasing.
In addition to bikes, the shop offers skateboards, a full line of parts and apparel.
It also features what’s been dubbed the “Re-Cycle Room,” a space dedicated to used action sports merchandise, from trade-in bikes and boards to outgrown boots.
Harris is no stranger to retail sports. Before moving to Walla Walla, he managed a bike shop in Klamath Falls, Ore., and owned one in Burns, Ore. When he came to this area in 2003 he started up a mobile bicycle repair business.
The grand opening of 509 Sports takes place today and Saturday. Giveaways, prizes, refreshments and technical tips and demonstrations are all in store. Discounts of 20 percent will be offered on all bikes and skateboards, plus 30 percent discounts off parts, tubes and tires are also expected. A drawing will be held for a 20-inch Subrosa BMX.
