Pirates fall in semis at state

SPOKANE — Pomeroy dug too deep a hole Friday in the semifinals of the WIAA Class 1B boys basketball state tournament at the Spokane Arena.

Sunnyside Christian, winner of two of the last three 1B titles, jumped to a 25-12 halftime lead and the Pirates never caught up as the Knights earned a spot in Saturday’s championship battle with a 51-40 win.

Sunnyside took advantage of a bad shooting start for the Pirates, and pounded the offensive glass to take a 12-4 lead after one.

The second quarter didn’t get much better for Pomeroy.

The Pirates converted 3-of-13 shots, with buckets from Tanner Feider, Bryan McGreevy, and Cade Snyder, plus two Feider free throws, but the Knights scored 13 and went to the half up 25-12.

The Pirates hit only 5–of-24 from the field in the first half.

And with 6-foot-6 post Cody LaMunyan in foul trouble after getting his second personal 3:13 into the game, the Knights, behind 6-foot-7 Brandon Broersman, 6-4 Drew Scheenstra, and 6-1 Drew Puterbaugh, controlled the glass with a 24-10 advantage over the first 16 minutes.

“We struggled on the boards, especially in the first half,” Pirate coach Brian Koller said. “Offensively, we really struggled. That is a tribute to them (the Knights). They played tremendous defense.”

The Pirates cut the Sunnyside lead to 10 twice in the third.

A coast-to-coast drive by Snider cut the lead to 30-20 with 3:46 to go and a Tyson Feider bucket at the 1:30 mark made it 32-22.

But Alex Brouwer, who led all scorers with 16, converted a three-point play and the Knights ran the lead back to 13 at 35-22 with 1:17 to play in the third.

“The second half was a little better,” Koller said. “We tried the old fouling game (in the fourth quarter).”

A Tyson Feider free throw cut the margin to 41-30 with 3:53 left and the Pirates went to the “fouling game.”

The Knights converted five-of-eleven free throws over the next two minutes.

The Pirates got treys from McGreevy, Tanner Feider, Riley Bott over that two-minute stretch with Bott’s cutting the Knight lead to 46-39 with 1:55 left.

The Knights hit five-of-eight from the line the rest of the way and all the Pirates could convert was a free throw from Snyder with 18 seconds left.

“They are very disciplined,” Koller added. “They are a good basketball team.”

Tanner Feider led the Pirates with 11 and McGreevy finished with 10. The loss dropped the Pirates into a Saturday battle for third place.

“We’ll be alright,” Koller said. “We’ll bounce back and be ready.”
