Whitman women make Sweet 16 at NCAAs

PORTLAND — Sarah Anderegg led four Whitman players in double figures with 17 points here Saturday night as the Missionaries claimed a 66-57 upset victory over nationally 13th-ranked and Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark in the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament at the Pamplin Sports Center.

Meghan White added 12 points, Heather Johns chipped in with 11, and Mary Madden scored 10 points as Whitman improved to 22-5 on the season and punched its ticket for the Sweet Sixteen portion of the tournament.

The Missionaries will oppose Emory University of Atlanta, Ga., (24-3) on March 8 for the right to advance to the Elite Eight. Both a site and time for the contest have yet to be determined.

Lewis and Clark ended its season at 25-4.
