PORTLAND — Whitman picked up its first victory in the women’s NCAA Division III tournament in program history Friday night, riding a stifling defense to a 61-37 victory over Cal Lutheran in the opening round of the tournament.

“In my 12 years as coach at Whitman we’ve had several teams that were so close to getting here, so tonight we really wanted to make the most of our opportunity,” said Whitman coach Michelle Ferenz, whose team held the Regals to just 20 percent (11-of-54) shooting from the field. “We’re having fun. That’s the most important part of all of this.”

Whitman (21-5) was comparatively efficient on the offensive end, making 42.9 percent of its shots in the game.

Three Missionaries scored in double figures. Tiffani Traver led the way with 17, Heather Johns scored 13 and Sarah Anderegg contributed 12.

Meghan White led the Missionaries with 12 rebounds and Whitman won the battle of the boards decisively, 45-34.

Traver hit five 3-pointers in the game, including four in the first half.

Whitman never trailed in the game.

The Regals trailed 33-18 at the half and managed to pull to within 12, 35-23, with 18:02 to go in the second half, but Whitman answered with an Anderegg layup and the Missionaries cruised from there.

“I think a key was that we never really lost our composure,” Ferenz said.” “Every time they tried to chip away, the girls really responded well by attacking back, being aggressive offensively and on the defensive end forcing them (the Regals) to take tough shots and then cleaning the boards up.”

Cal Lutheran ends its season at 23-5 after its season-consecutive trip to the tournament.
