WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Community College baseball team opened its 2013 season team by pounding out 29 hits and plating 23 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Centralia, 14-7 and 9-6, Saturday.
“I thought we swung the bats very well,” WWCC coach Dave Meliah said. “Especially Jarrod Turner, Corey Morris and Tony Salas. We also did a good job of executing situations offensively.”
Turner smacked three doubles and a single in the first game.
Corey Morris ripped five hits (two doubles) and walked twice on the day.
Salas contributed three singles in a standout performance in the nightcap.
Jake Conover pitched five innings of two-run ball in game one to get the win.
Jake Campeau gave up three runs over seven innings to earn the game-two triumph.
“Jake Campeau threw a great game in game two,” Meliah said. “He got ahead of hitters and was able to use his off-speed pitches to his advantage.”
The Warriors mixed and matched the lineup in the two early-season games.
“Overall, a lot of new players got their feet wet and it was a great way to start off the season,” Meliah said.
The Warriors host Prairie Baseball Academy for a twin bill today at 11 a.m.
