RICHLAND — Walla Walla Community College’s softball team took a couple of wins at its NWAACC preseason tournament Saturday, 11-3 over Chemeketa and 13-6 over Grays Harbor, at the Columbia Playfields in Richland.
The Warriors resumed play Sunday in the round robin tournament of 16 against Pierce at 1 p.m. and Lower Columbia 3 p.m.
On Saturday, Walla Walla trailed Chemeketa 3-2 going into the bottom of the third and had a four-run rally, led by a three-run homer off the bat of Marisa Gonzalez.
The Warriors seized a 6-3 lead after the inning and rolled to an eight-run win.
Kaitlin Erm was in the circle and pitched well. She gave up the three runs on six hits.
“Erm pitched good for the first time out,” WWCC coach Mike Staudenmaier said. “She will need to continue to use the defense behind her.”
Grays Harbor led early against the Warriors too, 4-2, until the bottom of the fourth. Then the Warriors put up four runs to take a 6-4 lead.
Walla Walla smacked 17 hits and scored 13 runs by the end of the game to win.
Warrior player Brook Simpson hammered a round-tripper in the game.
